Tuesday Times Roundtables

This Global Learning experience called Tuesday Times Roundtables was called Civil Rights in Education: The Legacy of Bob Moses and the Continuation of his Work.  It was different and more impactful than any of the other TTR's I attended this semester because the speaker (Maria Lovett, Associate Clinical Professor, Educational Policy Studies at FIU) had it open for conversation and discussion.  Around the room, she had pasted different Bob Moses quotes.  We were to walk around the room, read them, and stand underneath the one that we felt most connected to.

I felt most connected to the quote pictured to the left.. The part that stood out to me the most was the last question: "What kind of society will we be?" In the discussion that stemmed from this, we spoke about issues like the "Stop Woke Act" that dictate what can and can't be taught in classrooms and how that impacts individual lives.  We also discussed how the country is not the same as it was 10 years ago, and that we're not okay with the path that we are going down.

This is a conversation that I will never forget.  It was centered around people who are passionate about the same issues I am and who are also fighting for change in the world around us.  We cannot all be lawyers, cannot all be politicians, cannot all be teachers.  But, if we want to leave lasting change, we must all make our contirbutions no matter our field of interest or work.  We must strive to inspire others and to make the difference ourselves -- that is how we can transform society into one that is more respectful, enlightened, and engaged.
